Food

Those needing meal assistance have many food pantry options to choose from in both Buchanan and Andrew County. Prior to receiving assistance, both counties require recipients to acquire a yellow food pantry card, which is punched at each visit. The cards allow one monthly food pantry visit with the exception of the Harvest House Perishable Pantry located at the Second Harvest Community Food Bank, which also permits one supplemental visit each week. Any exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis upon contacting your local food pantry.

Missouri law grants access to government commodities once monthly, and commodities can only be acquired from a pantry in your county of residence. USDA commodities are not affected by the food pantry card.

A maximum of one card will be issued per household, and the card is valid for a period of six months. Buchanan County residents will need to report lost or stolen cards to the Second Harvest Community Food Bank, (816) 364-3663, and those living in Andrew County will need to file their report with the Community Action Partnership (CAP), (816) 324-3473. Only one replacement will be permitted every six months, and the cost of the replacement is $5.

While the card is free, recipients will need to prove eligibility and provide certain criteria to receive it. Required criteria, locations of where to obtain food pantry cards, and days and hours of operation are listed below by county.

Recipients will need to bring the following when applying for food pantry cards:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of personal and household income
  • Social security cards and birth-dates for all household members

Food Stamps – Close the Gap

Close the Gap services those individuals partaking in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly called food stamps. The program utilizes the help of two full-time Food Security Coordinators and is geared toward helping local residents get enrolled in the program.

To be eligible, individuals must meet certain criteria and provide materials including proof of income, proof of housing expenses such as rent or mortgage and utility payments, and proof of other expenses like child support, childcare or eldercare. However, if anyone in your household receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), no income limit is applicable.

To apply for benefits, applicants should bring in the required paperwork and meet with a Food Security Coordinator. The Food Security Coordinator will conduct pre-screening and will let applicants know if they able to proceed. Coordinators are also available to go on location to help with benefits enrollment by appointment.
